CV rules by country: photo, date of birth and length
A photo that is normal in Vienna is advised against in Toronto. This reference compares 23 of the 26 countries our CV builder supports, and every statement links to the source it came from. Where sources disagree, we show both. Where we found no reliable source, we say so.
Last checked: 4 November 2026
What the comparison shows
- The photo splits by region. Sources in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and Mexico advise leaving it off or say it is not needed. Sources in Austria, Spain and Japan treat it as normal or recommend it.
- Germany sits in between. The Federal Employment Agency says a photo is not required, though it adds that most employers still expect one.
- Length varies less than the photo. Most entries fall within one or two pages, and the main exceptions are Switzerland and Australia, where sources allow up to three.
- The Gulf has the weakest evidence. We found no government or university guidance on the photo or date of birth for the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman, and recruiters in the region contradict each other on date of birth and length.

Countries with no claims yet
Our builder also supports these three countries. We publish nothing about them here because we could not verify it.
- Egypt. We found CV-builder blogs and individual academics' CVs, but no guidance from a government body, a university careers office or an established recruiter.
- Jordan. The same result: individual academics' CVs show what some people include, which is not guidance.
- Morocco. The national employment agency, ANAPEC, appears to publish CV guidance, but its site did not load when we checked, so we could not read the page. We will add it once we can.
How we checked
- We opened and read every linked page or PDF on the date above. A search-engine summary did not count as a source.
- We looked first for government bodies and public employment services, then university careers services. Recruiters appear only where we found nothing better, mainly in the Gulf. We did not use CV-builder blogs, because they sell the advice they give.
- These are mostly conventions rather than laws. Much of the university advice is written for students and recent graduates, so experienced applicants may see different norms.
- A source from one institution does not prove a national standard. The job ad and the employer's own instructions come first, and this page is not legal advice.
CV Analyz sells an AI CV builder, which uses its own country settings. This page reports what the sources say, and those settings may differ from it.
Create a CV for your target countryCommon questions
Should I put a photo on my CV?
It depends on the country. Sources in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia and Mexico advise leaving it off or say it is not needed. Sources in Austria, Spain and Japan treat it as normal or recommend it. If the job ad says something specific, follow the ad.
Is a photo on a CV illegal in the United States?
The guidance we read is aimed at employers: the EEOC says employers should not ask for a photograph. It does not say applicants are banned from adding one. Harvard and Duke career services still advise against it.
Do I need my date of birth on a CV in Germany?
The Federal Employment Agency lists date and place of birth among the details at the top of a CV. Marital status and religion, by contrast, are not required unless the employer has a specific religious affiliation.
How long should a CV be?
In most countries here, one or two pages. Switzerland and Australia allow up to three. France, Spain and China lean towards one page, and Spain and France accept two with more experience.
Why are Egypt, Jordan and Morocco not in the table?
We could not verify claims about them. For Egypt and Jordan we found no guidance from a government body, a university careers office or an established recruiter. For Morocco, the national employment agency's site did not load when we checked.
