CV for Jobs in the UAE and the Gulf: Format, Photo and What Recruiters Expect
How to write a CV for the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf: expected format, photo and personal details, visa and notice period, attestation of certificates, and the keywords regional recruiters screen for.
Gulf hiring is fast, international and heavily recruiter-driven. Most applications pass through agencies and job portals before an employer sees them, and the screening is practical: can this person legally start, when, and at what cost? A CV that answers those questions on page one is read differently from one that does not.
What a Gulf CV expects that a UK or US CV does not
- A photo is normal and often expected — a professional headshot, not a casual picture.
- Nationality is commonly included, and is routinely used in regional screening.
- Visa status matters: employment visa, residence visa, visit visa, or outside the country.
- Notice period is a real selection criterion — say 30 days, immediately available, or similar.
- Driving licence: mention it where the role involves travel between sites or emirates.
- Marital status and date of birth are still seen on regional CVs; they are optional and you may leave them out.
Structure that works in the region
- Header: name, city and country, phone with country code, email, LinkedIn, photo.
- Personal and availability block: nationality, visa status, notice period, driving licence.
- Profile: 3–4 lines on your field, years of experience, regional experience if any, and the target role.
- Experience: company, country, title, dates, and 3–5 achievements with numbers.
- Education and certifications — note whether degrees are attested, if that applies to your field.
- Languages: English level, Arabic level, and any others. Arabic is a genuine advantage in client-facing and government-adjacent work.
Example profile
Civil engineer with 7 years in high-rise construction, including 3 years in the UAE on projects up to AED 180M. Managed site teams of 25 and delivered two towers on schedule with zero lost-time incidents. UAE residence visa holder, 30 days’ notice, seeking a senior site engineer role in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Attestation, licences and local exams
Several fields require more than a degree. Healthcare professionals need eligibility or a licence from the relevant authority — DHA or DoH in the UAE, SCFHS in Saudi Arabia. Engineers often need registration with a municipality or a society. Many employers require degree attestation through the embassy and the ministry of foreign affairs. If a step is in progress, write that it is in progress rather than leaving a silence a recruiter has to guess about.
Keywords regional recruiters screen for
- Availability terms: immediately available, notice period, transferable visa, NOC, employment visa.
- Regional experience: GCC experience, UAE experience, Saudi experience — name the country and the project.
- Your field plus the local standard or authority: the municipal code, the health authority, the regulator.
- Languages: English, Arabic — and the level, not just the name of the language.
Length and tone
Two pages is the norm; three is accepted for senior technical roles with a project list. Keep the tone factual. Regional recruiters read many CVs quickly, so scannable sections and concrete numbers matter more than polished prose.
In the Gulf, a CV that hides visa status and notice period is not discreet. It is simply harder to shortlist.
