Are Two-Column CVs ATS Friendly? How Parsers Read Them and How to Stay Safe
Do two-column resumes pass applicant tracking systems? Why a sidebar can be read out of order or duplicated, which layouts are safe, and a simple test you can run on your own PDF.
Two-column CVs look modern and save space. Whether they pass an applicant tracking system depends less on the columns themselves than on how the PDF was built.
How a parser reads a PDF
A PDF does not store «columns». It stores pieces of text with positions on the page. The parser has to rebuild the reading order. When a sidebar and the main column sit side by side, a weak parser may read across both columns line by line, mixing a skill from the sidebar into the middle of a job description.
What can go wrong
- Lines from both columns merged into one sentence.
- The sidebar (contact details, skills) read twice or not at all.
- Section headings attached to the wrong content.
- Ligatures such as «fi» lost when text is exported in an unusual way.
We know these problems from experience: we had to rebuild how CV Analyz reads exported two-column PDFs so that sidebars are no longer duplicated or mixed into the main column.
When two columns are safe
- The PDF contains real, selectable text (not an image).
- The sidebar holds short items: contact, skills, languages.
- Experience and achievements stay in the main column.
- No text boxes, tables used for layout, or text inside images.
The 30-second test
- Open your PDF and select all text (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A).
- Copy and paste it into a plain text editor.
- Check: is each job in one piece, in the right order, with nothing duplicated?
If the pasted text is mixed up, a parser may see it the same way.
Columns are not the problem. A PDF that loses its reading order is.
Check how your CV is read
Upload your PDF to CV Analyz: the analysis is based on the text it extracts from your file, so missing sections or a low formatting score quickly show whether the layout causes trouble. Our templates, including two-column ones, export with a real text layer.
