Translator and Interpreter CV: Language Pairs, CAT Tools, Specialisations and Examples
How to write a CV for translators and interpreters: presenting language pairs and direction, specialisations, CAT tools, certifications, volume and quality metrics, and examples for freelance and in-house roles.
Agencies and clients scan a translator's CV for four things: language pairs, specialisation, tools and proof of quality. Put them where they cannot be missed.
Language pairs and direction
Write them clearly at the top: «Arabic > English, English > Arabic (native Arabic)». Most clients expect translation into your native language; say so if you work in both directions.
Specialisations
Legal, medical, technical, financial, marketing, game localisation, subtitling. Two or three real specialisations are more convincing than ten.
Tools
- CAT tools: Trados Studio, memoQ, Phrase, Wordfast, Smartcat.
- Terminology management and translation memories.
- Machine translation post-editing (MTPE).
- Subtitling software for audiovisual work.
Proof of quality and volume
- «Translated 1.2 million words for 15 agencies since 2020.»
- «Lead translator for a 300,000-word medical device manual; zero critical errors in client QA.»
- «Localised a mobile game into Arabic, rated 4.7 in Gulf app stores.»
- «Simultaneous interpreting for 40+ conferences.»
Certifications
Sworn or certified translator status, ATA certification, CIOL or ITI membership, university degrees in translation. Mention your country's official accreditation where it exists.
Pairs, specialisation, tools, proof. In that order.
