Self-Employed or Business Owner CV: How to Present Your Own Company
How to write a CV when you ran your own business: the title to use, how to describe the company and your results, what to do about the end of the business, and how to reassure employers you can work in a team.
Running your own business is a management role with full responsibility for revenue, people and risk. It is also a line that makes some recruiters nervous: will this person take direction, stay, work within a budget they did not set? A good self-employed CV answers both halves: it shows the scale of what you built and it shows you want to bring it into a team.
Choose a title that describes the work
«Founder» and «Owner» are accurate but tell the reader nothing about what you did day to day. Pair them with the function: «Owner and Head of Operations», «Founder and Lead Developer», «Managing Director (sales and client delivery)». ATS software matches on functional titles; a recruiter looking for a project manager does not search for «Owner».
Describe the company in one line
Before the bullets, give the reader scale: «Independent landscaping company serving 120 residential and commercial clients in Hamburg; 6 staff; annual revenue around €450k.» The numbers can be rounded; they should be true. Without this line the reader cannot tell a one-person side project from a real company.
Write results the way an employee would
- Grew client base from 20 to 120 accounts in four years with a referral programme.
- Hired, trained and scheduled a team of 6; staff turnover below 15 % a year.
- Managed a €450k budget, supplier contracts and VAT accounting with an external accountant.
- Delivered 300+ projects on time; maintained a 4.8/5 rating across 200 public reviews.
If the business closed
Say so plainly in the dates and move on; businesses close for market reasons every day. One neutral phrase is enough if you want it: «Closed the company in 2025 after the main client contract ended.» Do not write a paragraph of explanation, and do not hide the business under a vague «consulting» label.
The recruiter's worry is not that you ran a business. It is that you will miss running one. Answer that in the summary.
Answer the hidden question in the summary
«Operations lead with 8 years running a six-person service company, now looking to apply that end-to-end delivery experience inside a larger team where I can focus on operations rather than everything at once.» That sentence says why you want to be employed, and it says it as a positive choice.
Skills that transfer, named properly
Translate owner tasks into the vocabulary of the job ad: pricing becomes «commercial negotiation», doing the books becomes «P&L management», chasing invoices becomes «accounts receivable», hiring becomes «recruitment and onboarding». The same work, in words the ATS and the hiring manager both recognise.
Country notes
In Germany, name the legal form (GmbH, Einzelunternehmen) and register the fact that the business was deregistered if it was; employers may ask. In the UK, «sole trader» or «limited company director» is understood. In the Gulf, a trade licence and the free zone or emirate help show legitimacy. In the US, «Owner/Operator» is a common, recognised title.
Translate it into an employer's CV
CV Analyz compares your business experience with the job ad and rewrites it as the role, scale and results an employer is looking for, using only what you actually did.

Improve your CV nowFrequently asked questions
How do I put self-employment on a CV?
List it like a job: a functional title (for example «Owner and Head of Operations»), the company name, dates, one line on scale, then results with numbers.
Does being a business owner look bad on a CV?
No, if you show scale and results and say in the summary why you now want to work inside a team.
What title should a self-employed person use on a CV?
Pair «Founder» or «Owner» with the function you actually performed, such as «Founder and Lead Developer», so ATS and recruiters can match it.
