CV for a Part-Time Job: What to Include When You're Studying or Working

October 29, 20263 min read

How to write a short, convincing CV for a part-time job as a student, a parent or someone with a full-time job: availability, relevant experience, the right length and a ready structure with examples.

A part-time job CV is read by a store manager, a café owner or a shift supervisor, often on a phone, often between two other tasks. They are asking three things: can you do the work, when can you work, and will you actually show up. A one-page CV that answers those three in the first half of the page gets the call.

Put availability near the top

For part-time roles, availability is a qualification. Add a line under your contact details: «Available: Mon–Wed after 15:00, all day Sat; up to 20 hours a week from 1 November». If you are a student, say when the semester ends; if you have another job, say which hours are free. It saves the manager a phone call, and it is often the reason you are chosen over an equally qualified applicant.

Structure for a one-page part-time CV

  1. Name, phone, email, city, availability.
  2. Two-line summary: who you are and what you offer («Second-year nursing student with two years of weekend café experience; reliable, fast under pressure, cash handling and POS»).
  3. Experience: any paid work, internships, volunteering, school or university roles, with two to three bullets each.
  4. Skills: the practical ones the ad names (till, inventory, customer service, Excel, driving licence, languages).
  5. Education: current programme and expected end date.

No work experience yet?

  • Volunteering, school events, sports team roles and family-business help all count; describe what you did and for how long.
  • Add one or two short, concrete achievements: «Handled the ticket desk at a 300-visitor school fair», «Tutored two classmates in maths for a year».
  • Name the soft skills the job needs with proof: punctuality (perfect attendance), reliability (same volunteer role for two years).
For a part-time job, reliability is the product. Everything on the page should be evidence that you turn up and do the work.

Tailor it in five minutes

Read the ad once, underline the three skills it names, and make sure each one appears in your summary or skills section in the same words. For a retail role that is «customer service», «till» and «stock»; for a tutoring role it is the subject and the age group. That is all the tailoring a part-time CV needs.

Country notes

In Germany, part-time student roles (Werkstudent, Minijob) often ask for the weekly hours you may legally work alongside your studies; state them. In Japan, part-time (arubaito) applications use a standard rirekisho form where the availability field matters most. In the UK, Ireland and Australia, state your right to work and, for students, the hours your visa allows. In the Gulf, part-time work for residents is permit-based; mention your status.
