Military to Civilian CV: How to Translate Ranks, Duties and Achievements

October 28, 20262 min read

How veterans and service members can write a civilian CV: translating ranks and military jargon into business language, which roles fit military experience, security clearances and examples.

Military experience brings leadership, discipline, logistics and working under pressure. The problem is the language: civilian recruiters rarely understand ranks, unit names or acronyms. Your job is to translate.

Translate titles and ranks

  • Platoon commander → Team leader / Operations manager (team of 30).
  • Logistics NCO → Supply chain coordinator.
  • Signals specialist → IT network technician.
  • Training instructor → Trainer / Learning and development specialist.

You can keep the rank in brackets for context, but lead with the civilian equivalent.

Replace jargon with business results

  • «Led a team of 30 personnel in high-pressure operations with zero safety incidents over 18 months.»
  • «Managed equipment and inventory worth $4M with 100 % accountability in annual audits.»
  • «Planned logistics for the deployment of 200 people and 60 vehicles across 3 sites.»
  • «Trained 120 new recruits per year; pass rate improved from 82 % to 94 %.»

Roles that fit military experience

Operations, logistics and supply chain, project management, security, facilities, emergency management, training, IT and technical maintenance.

Certifications and clearance

Add civilian equivalents of your training where possible (PMP, first aid, HGV licence, IT certificates). A security clearance can be valuable for defence and government contractors; mention its level only where appropriate.

Avoid

  • Acronyms without explanation.
  • Combat details irrelevant to the role.
  • Classified information of any kind.
The skills are already there. The CV just has to speak the employer's language.
