Mechanical and Electrical Engineer CV: Skills, Keywords and Examples That Pass ATS

October 28, 20262 min read

How to write a mechanical or electrical engineer CV: the technical skills and software recruiters search for, how to describe projects with measurable results, certifications that matter, and example bullet points.

Engineering recruiters read CVs for proof, not adjectives. They want to see which systems you worked on, which tools you used and what improved because of your work.

Structure

  1. Header with title: «Mechanical Engineer – HVAC Design» or «Electrical Engineer – Power Distribution».
  2. A 3-line summary: years of experience, sector, one measurable result.
  3. Technical skills grouped by category.
  4. Experience with project-based bullets.
  5. Education, licences and certifications.

Keywords recruiters search for

  • Mechanical: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, ANSYS, FEA, CFD, GD&T, HVAC, thermodynamics, DFM, preventive maintenance.
  • Electrical: AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, EPLAN, PLC (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), SCADA, power distribution, protection relays, load calculations, LV/MV switchgear.
  • Shared: MEP coordination, Revit, commissioning, root cause analysis, Lean, Six Sigma, IEC and NEC standards.

Use only the tools you have actually used, and spell them exactly as the job ad does.

Write projects, not duties

  • «Redesigned a pump housing in SolidWorks, reducing part weight by 18 % and machining time by 25 %.»
  • «Designed the LV distribution for a 12-storey hospital (2.5 MVA), approved first time by the authority.»
  • «Led preventive maintenance for 40 production machines; unplanned downtime fell from 6 % to 2.1 %.»
  • «Programmed Siemens S7 PLCs for a packaging line, increasing throughput by 14 %.»

Licences and certifications

List professional registration first, for example PE (US), CEng (UK), P.Eng (Canada) or registration with the Saudi Council of Engineers. Then add relevant certificates: PMP, Six Sigma Green Belt, NEBOSH or vendor PLC training.

Common mistakes

  • A long list of software with no context.
  • Projects without size, budget or outcome.
  • Engineering jargon that hides your personal contribution in a team project.
Every bullet should answer: what system, what you did, and what changed.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should a mechanical engineer put on a CV?

CAD tools such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, analysis tools such as ANSYS, and domain skills like HVAC, GD&T or maintenance planning, depending on the role.

How long should an engineering CV be?

One page for graduates, two pages for most experienced engineers. A project list can go in an appendix if requested.

Should I include my engineering licence number?

Mention the licence or registration; the number itself is only needed if the employer asks for it.
