Lawyer CV: Examples, Skills and ATS Keywords for Legal Roles

October 27, 20263 min read

How to write a legal CV that passes ATS screening and convinces partners: structure, practice areas, bar admission, a sample profile, matter-based achievements and the keywords law firms search for.

Legal recruitment is unusually document-driven: the CV is itself a writing sample. Partners and in-house counsel read for precision, and firms increasingly screen with an applicant tracking system first. A legal CV therefore has to be exact about qualification and jurisdiction, and specific about the matters you have actually worked on.

Structure of a legal CV

  1. Header: name, city, phone, email — and your bar admission or licence with the jurisdiction and year.
  2. Profile: 3–4 lines on your practice area, years in practice, type of clients and the role you are targeting.
  3. Experience: firm or legal department, title, dates, practice area and 3–5 matter-based achievements.
  4. Education: law degree, institution, year, and professional exams with their status.
  5. Admissions and memberships: bar associations, notary or mediation qualifications.
  6. Languages and legal drafting languages — often decisive for cross-border work.
  7. Publications or lectures, if relevant to your area.

Example profile

Commercial lawyer with 6 years in contract and corporate law, advising mid-sized technology clients on supply, licensing and data-processing agreements. Drafted and negotiated over 200 commercial contracts and supported three acquisitions from due diligence to closing. Seeking an in-house counsel role in a technology company.

Write matters, not duties

Client confidentiality limits what you may name, but not what you may describe. Use value, volume, complexity and outcome without identifying the client:

  • Drafted and negotiated 200+ commercial contracts a year, including framework supply and SaaS licensing agreements.
  • Led due diligence on a cross-border acquisition in the manufacturing sector, coordinating three external firms.
  • Represented clients in 40+ employment disputes, resolving the majority through settlement before hearing.
  • Built the company’s standard contract templates and clause library, cutting external legal spend.
  • Advised on GDPR compliance for a product launch across five jurisdictions.

Skills law firms look for

  • Practice: contract drafting, legal research, litigation, due diligence, regulatory compliance, negotiation, legal opinions.
  • Areas: corporate and commercial, employment, data protection, intellectual property, real estate, criminal, family, arbitration.
  • Tools: legal research databases, document management systems, e-discovery and contract lifecycle management tools.
  • Soft skills: precision, judgement under deadline, client communication, confidentiality, stakeholder management.

ATS keywords for legal CVs

Legal screening is strongly term-based, because jurisdiction and practice area are hard filters. Use the exact words of the advert where they are true for you:

  • admitted to the bar, legal counsel, in-house counsel, associate, paralegal, legal advisor
  • contract drafting, contract negotiation, due diligence, compliance, risk assessment, legal opinion
  • corporate law, commercial law, employment law, data protection, GDPR, intellectual property, litigation, arbitration
  • your jurisdiction and languages: they are often the first filter applied to the whole pile

Applying abroad

State plainly what your qualification allows in the target country. A foreign law degree rarely transfers automatically: mention recognition status, a qualifying exam in progress, or that you are applying for roles where local admission is not required, such as legal operations or compliance. Vagueness here costs more interviews than a missing qualification.

A legal CV is judged first as a piece of drafting. Imprecision on your own document is the worst possible argument.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a lawyer CV be?

Two pages for most practitioners; one page for trainees and newly qualified lawyers. Senior lawyers with publications may use a third page for those only.

Should I name clients on a legal CV?

No. Describe the sector, deal size or matter type instead — confidentiality is itself a quality a legal employer is assessing.

What keywords matter most on a legal CV?

Your admission and jurisdiction, your practice area, and the core activities of the role: contract drafting, due diligence, litigation, compliance.
