Why Am I Not Getting Any Responses to My CV? 10 Reasons and How to Fix Each One
Sending applications and hearing nothing back? The 10 most common reasons a CV gets no response, from ATS filtering to vague achievements, and a practical fix for each one.
Silence after dozens of applications is the most discouraging part of a job search. It rarely means you are not qualified. Usually the CV fails at one of a few predictable points before a human ever reads it properly. Here are the ten most common, roughly in the order they filter you out.
1. The ATS cannot read your file
Text inside images, text boxes, headers or exotic two-column layouts often arrives garbled or empty in the applicant tracking system. Fix: use a clean, single-column or well-structured template and export a real text PDF, not a scan.
2. The keywords of the job ad are missing
Recruiters search the ATS for the exact terms in the ad. If the ad says «financial reporting» and your CV says «preparing numbers for management», you may never appear. Fix: mirror the ad's wording wherever it is true for you.
3. One CV for every job
A generic CV fits no role well. Fix: adjust the summary, the order of skills and the top bullets for each application. Ten minutes per job makes a visible difference.
4. Duties instead of results
«Responsible for social media» describes a job description, not you. Fix: write what changed because of you, with a number where possible: «Grew Instagram followers from 4k to 19k in 12 months».
5. The first third of the page is weak
Recruiters decide in seconds. If the top of the page is an objective statement and contact details, the strongest evidence comes too late. Fix: a 3-line summary with your title, years of experience and one proven strength.
6. You apply above or below your level
Applying for senior roles with two years of experience, or junior roles with fifteen, both trigger quick rejections. Fix: target roles where you meet most of the must-have requirements.
7. Wrong conventions for the country
A photo and date of birth are normal in Germany or the Gulf but a red flag in the US or UK. A three-page résumé is fine in Australia but long for France. Fix: follow the norms of the country you are applying to.
8. Typos and inconsistent formatting
Mixed date formats, two fonts and spelling errors signal carelessness. Fix: one date format, one font family, and a final read aloud.
9. Unexplained gaps or job hopping
A gap is not a problem; an unexplained one invites assumptions. Fix: one honest line, such as «Career break: family care» or «Relocation and language course».
10. The problem is not the CV
Sometimes the CV is fine and the channel is the issue: very popular job boards, roles that are already filled internally, or applications sent weeks after posting. Fix: apply within the first days, and combine applications with referrals and direct messages.
No reply is data. Change one thing at a time and watch what happens to your response rate.
How to find out which reason applies to you
Guessing is slow. CV Analyz reads your CV like an ATS, gives a score out of 100 for your target job and lists exactly what is missing: keywords, structure, measurable results and country conventions. You can try it without creating an account, and your original file is not stored.

Why am I not getting any responses to my job applications?
Most often the CV is filtered by the ATS because of formatting or missing keywords, or it lists duties instead of measurable results. Applying late or above your level also lowers response rates.
How many applications without a reply is normal?
Response rates of 2 to 10 percent are common for online applications. If you are far below that after 30 to 40 tailored applications, the CV is likely the problem.
Should I follow up if I get no response?
Yes, one short, polite message about a week after applying is acceptable, ideally to the recruiter or hiring manager directly.
